POINT STANDINGS NOW UPDATED!
Our tournament started on Thursday evening, and the weather seemed to be on our side for most of the evening. While most of the city received quite the dounpour, Rhodes managed to dodge all rain, until 9:30 pm. Only 3 matches out of 22 were affected.
First round matches continued Friday evening, under sunny skies. Pizza was served around 6:00 pm, and the last match was completed around 10:30 pm.
Bright and early 8:00 am Saturday morning second rounds as well as consolation rounds began, after a delicious breakfast donated by Chick-fil-A in Germantown. Weather co-operated nicely, until a sudden downpour at 4:00 delayed play. Several matches were sent to WellWorX and to the University Club to complete. While finishing them, the rain stopped. The tournament director, several MTA Board members, the Rhodes tennis pro, players, and spouses graciously chipped in by pushing the squeegies around the courts. And in record time, the courts were back in play by 5:30 pm. Beverages provided by BOSCOS and GHOST RIVER were available throughout the day, and smoked pork and chicken was delivered by 6:30 pm. Despite the delay, all matches finished on time.
Sunday morning, final rounds began again at 8:00 am, and a breakfast of donuts and bagels was provided. The day began very overcast and pleasant, but by noon the sun broke through and warmed things up nicely to a balmy 92 degrees! MTA board members were sent on a “water run” due to the heat! Lunch was generously donated by Lenny’s Sub Shop. At high noon a large crowd enjoyed several intense matches, including the Men’s Open, as well as an impressively friendly re-match Final between some very competitive Men’s 3.5 Doubles teams. There was no short of entertainment for even the average tennis enthusiast! Mixed Doubles finished up the tournament, and we all went home around 8:30.
Once again, we hope you enjoyed yourselves, thanks for playing, and we look forward to seeing you back for Memphis Cup IV in October!
