Tennis Levels

Wonder which "level" is right for you? Check out these resources to help you either get started or continue on your tennis journey.

Tennis Ball Level

Red - lowest compression. Slowest ball, least bounce. Ages 5–8; beginner.

Orange - 50% slower than standard ball. Less bounce. Ages 8–10; intermediate beginners.

Green - 25% flower than the standard ball. Almost full bounce. Ages 9–12; transition to full court

Yellow - Standard ball. Full speed/bounce. Teens and adults.

Tennis Racquet Size

19 - 23 inch - players age 8 and under

23 - 25 inch - 9-10 year-old age group

26 inch - young players looking to transition to full-court play

27 inch and up - generally considered adult rackets, or anyone looking to play full court.

USTA NTRP Ratings

1.5 - beginner, no experience.

2.5 - beginner competitive player. Can keep score, can serve, can return the ball. This is the lowest level of competitive league available in Memphis.

3.0 - 4.0 - where the majority of recreational players are rated. Can keep a consistent rally, execute strategic game-play, and alternate the speed of their shots.

4.5 - where collegiate player rankings start. These players are consistent, have great control of their ball, and have previously participated in competitive tournaments.

6.0 - top-level collegiate competitors and international tournament participants

6.5 - 7.0 - world-class players
